The marriage of sound and photos is a grand tradition that goes back to 1927 and "The Jazz Singer". Adding sound to your still images can be a powerful storytelling technique.
For still photographers interested in multimedia, the audio slideshow can be the beginning of a great adventure. Good audio brings an intimacy to your work that just isn't possible with text or photos alone.
For those not sure how to get started, this presentation is an introduction to the hardware, software & skills required to gather & edit compelling storytelling sound to accompany your images. We will look at options for recorders & microphones, talk about editing and focus on techniques & methods for gathering great sound and telling audio stories.
About Will
Will Yurman is a staff photographer at the Rochester (N.Y.) Democrat & Chronicle, where he has been a long-time innovator in multimedia storytelling. His work features strong visual content, driven by natural sound and the subject's own words.
A photographer for more than 20 years, Will began as a photographer's assistant in Albany, N.Y., and later worked as a freelance photographer in Alaska and the Middle East.
Will began exploring multimedia, combining audio with photos, in 2000. At the Democrat and Chronicle he helped launch a weekly photo column called First Person that appeared in print and online. He has produced numerous shows for the site, working with stills, audio, video and text to tell stories in a way that just isn't possible in print.
In 2007 he produced a yearlong project that documented the lives of every homicide victim in the greater Rochester area in that year. The online project tells the story of each victim through photographs and interviews with family and friends and culminated with a solo exhibit at the George Eastman House.
His still photography and multimedia work have been recognized in the Best of Photography and Picture of the Year International contests as well as the New York Publishers Association, the New York Associated Press and The Pro Football Hall of Fame. He is a graduate of the State University New York at Albany and has twice been named NPPA Region 2 Photographer of the Year.
He teaches classes in photojournalism and multimedia at the Rochester Institute of Technology. He has also taught workshops at the Northern Short Course, the Great White North Photojournalism Workshop, the Online News Association annual workshop, The Mountain Workshops and the NPPA Multimedia Immersion.
